MLS: FC Dallas sack Estevez after slow start

The club will start the search for a replacement immediately

FC Dallas

FC Dallas have sacked coach Nico Estevez with the Texas franchise sitting 13th in the MLS Western Conference.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Minnesota United proved the final straw for the Dallas heirarchy who have opted to act now while they still have a mathematic chance of making the play-offs.

Estevez’s assistant Peter Luccin will take interim charge and aim to move the club from the lower reaches of the table.

“It is always a difficult decision to part ways with your head coach,” club president Dan Hunt said in a statement.

“A great deal of thought and deliberation went into this move as it is still early in the season. We believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club. I want to thank Nico for everything he has done for the club, including some great play-off memories.”

Dallas’ sporting director Andre Zanotta will lead the search to find a permanent successor to Estevez, who took over in December, 2021 and led them to successive play-off appearances.

It has been far from plain sailing this term, however, with Dallas winning just three of 16 MLS games.

They are seven points behind the Portland Timbers who occupy the final play-off spot.
