New York Red Bulls today signed vastly experienced defender Raheem Edwards on a two-year deal.

Edwards spent last season in his second spell at Montreal but, having made 25 appearances, the team decided against taking up his contract option.

The 29-year-old has had a nomadic career that has included spells at Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy.

“Raheem has a lot of experience in MLS and has won each major trophy in MLS in his career,” NYRB sporting director Julian de Guzman said. “His experience and leadership will be valuable to our roster, and we are excited for him to get to work with our team.”

In total, Edwards has made 177 career appearances in MLS, scoring eight goals and recording 28 assists.

NYRB head coach Sandro Schwarz said: “Raheem is a great individual that has a proven track record in MLS, and we are excited to have him with us.

“He has a great ability on both sides of the ball, and we are looking forward to getting him on the pitch with us soon.”

The Red Bulls finished seventh in the Eastern Conference last season, going on to reach the MLS Cup final where they lost to LA Galaxy.
