Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open title and became the first Italian in history to win three major crowns with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory over Alexander Zverev in the 2025 final.
World number one Sinner secured breaks in the eighth game of the first set and sixth game of the third, winning a second-set tie break in between with a measure of luck via a net cord after Zverev had claimed an early mini-break.
“For me, it’s… the most special Grand Slam,” reflected Sinner, describing it as an “amazing feeling” to share his victory with his team.

Sinner: Cahill ‘amazing’
Sinner praised his Australian coach, Darren Cahill, who intends to retire at the end of 2025, and compatriot Simone Vagnozzi, who has helped guide him since 2022.
“I’m very, very happy to share this trophy with [Cahill],” he said. “Everything started, a little bit, when I made my whole change to Simone. [They] are an amazing combination of coaches.”
Sinner has now won the last two Grand Slam tournaments following his triumph at the US Open in September, when he also won the final in straight sets against Taylor Fritz.

Zverev: Sinner ‘the best’
In his third Grand Slam final, world number two Zverev was aiming to become only the third German man to win a major and the first since Boris Becker in Melbourne in 1996, but the 27-year-old frequently cut a despondent figure in the face of few openings.
Zverev occasionally took out his frustrations on his racquets as his second Grand Slam final in under seven months failed to yield a single break point on Sinner’s service games.
“It sucks, standing here next to this trophy and not being able to touch it,” said Zverev, having previously reached the semi-finals twice, calling Sinner “the best player in the world by far”.

“I was hoping that I could be more of a competitor but [he is] just too good… [he has] done all the right things, so there is nobody who deserves the trophy more.
“I want to thank my team. We are trying to do all of the right work. I’m just not good enough – it is as simple as that.”
The next Grand Slam of 2025 is the French Open in May and June. Carlos Alcaraz beat Sinner in the semi-finals and Zverev in the final last year in Paris, winning in five sets on both occasions.
