Preview for Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are intending to honor the memory of Marshawn Kneeland by winning games.
The Cowboys’ season arguably rests on the next three games – and they are all tough tests – against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.
“We’ll find out a lot about ourselves,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “But I’m the guy that wants to play the good teams. I want to play the good teams and find out where we truly are. And I do think it’s fair, the question is fair. We’ll know a little bit more in the next whatever it is – 12 days, 11 days – where we stack up in the league. I think we’ll answer that question in a very positive way.”
The Cowboys moved to 4-5-1 with a 33-16 win against the Las Vegas Raiders in the first game since Kneeland’s death and quarterback Dan Prescott remains confident in their chances of claiming a playoff place.
“Why not?” asked Prescott.
“And I know I’ve been saying that, [and] I’ll probably keep saying that, ‘Why not?’ And it’s more about we’re in control, right? We’re in control, and life’s going to throw things at us, and it threw us a hell of a curveball this past week.
“And how are we going to respond? That’s what I was telling the team. To have a testimony we’ve got to go through a test. And this is a big test to our brotherhood and who we are, and to this organization, to us individually.
“Let’s have pride and let’s honor our brother. And if we can continue to do that, move forward carrying that light, why not?”
Prescott has won 18 straight home division games that he has started and a 19th would represent a notable coup against an Eagles side that are 8-2.
That’s not to say everything is rosy in Philly with Jalen Hurts having to defend himself this week against accusations his team-mates were growing tired with a perceived safety-first approach.
The Eagles rank 25th in total yards (300.1 per game), 28th in passing (184.9) and 29th in third down conversion rate (33.87%) this season.
“I’m not surprised by anything. This is kind of the nature of the position,” Hurts said. “But I put my energy and my focus on trying to go out there and do my best and trying to learn, trying to build, trying to take in the things that I can to try and improve.
“I guess I get a lot of attention when things are going well and when things are not going so well. I never run away from holding myself accountable, and I think that’s exactly what I’ve taken the approach of doing.
“I take great pride in what we do on offense. I take great pride in how we go out there and play as a team and what our flow is. I think we’ve got work to do, and that obviously starts with me. That’s always my approach. That’s always me looking internally first in everything that we do and then in due time rising above.”
