Real Sociedad vs Athletic Club match preview

The Basque derby is always one of the red-letter days in the La Liga calendar and, with both sides currently in impressive form, that makes this particular match-up all the more intriguing.

Of the two, Athletic Club kick off two points and two places better off, given that they’re still unbeaten since the opening weekend.

On Wednesday night, the Lions were held to an underwhelming 2-2 draw by Getafe, with Yuri Berchiche and Iñaki Williams on target at San Mamés.

Of course, Athletic would’ve been aiming to win that game but, given that Oihan Sancet was sent off in first half stoppage time, a point is no disaster.

Ernesto Valverde were beaten by Real Madrid in their season-opener but have not lost since, winning four out of six, although this’ll be their biggest test since then.

Real Sociedad meantime have won both matches they’ve played this week, overcoming Getafe 4-3 in an absolute thriller last weekend, before battling to a victory in Valencia on Wednesday.

Imanol Alguacil’s side have only tasted defeat once this season, beaten at the Bernabéu 13 days ago, while los Txuri-Urdinak have won their last two home matches, scoring nine goals in these outings.

So, roared on by a raucous home support, la Real have to be favourites to pick up three points at Anoeta.

Real Sociedad team news

With André Silva only just back from injury, mid-week scorer Carlos Fernández will lead the line, with club captain Mikel Oyarzabal in support.

However, the man to watch is Takefusa Kubo, who’s been sensational so far this season, scoring four times, and, having been rested against Valencia, will return to the XI.

Left-back Kieran Tierney will be amongst those getting their first taste of a Basque derby.

Athletic Club team news

Attacking midfielder Oihan Sancet is suspended, having been sent off against Getafe, which is a huge blow.

Iker Muniain is therefore likely to come in, hoping to support Iñaki Williams, who’s aiming to add to his four goals this season.

Having returned to the club earlier this year, Ander Herrera will feature in a first Basque derby in San Sebastián since 2013, yet to win at Anoeta.
