Manchester United vs Crystal Palace match preview

Having met in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, these two clubs go head-to-head once again at the same venue, albeit in the different competition, so will this one have a different outcome?

Four days ago, Manchester United began the defence of the EFL Cup with a routine 3-0 victory, in which Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial all scored.

This time last week, Erik ten Hag’s team had suffered three successive defeats, conceding 3+ in all of them, but have now enjoyed back-to-back wins, just about beating Burnley 1-0 last Saturday night.

Nevertheless, having won three and lost three, the Red Devils are still languishing in ninth place, so three points here is of paramount importance.

Crystal Palace meantime, who kick off one point and one place lower, are hoping to put up a sterner fight this time.

In the Premier League, last weekend’s goalless stalemate with Fulham means it’s two wins, two draws and two defeats for Roy Hodgson’s side, their wins coming over Sheffield United and Wolves.

Manchester United team news

Sofyan Amrabat impressed during his full-debut on Tuesday, deployed ostensibly at left-back, given that Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and now Sergio Reguilón are all out injured.

With Lisandro Martínez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also sidelined, there could be another start for last weekend’s man of the match Jonny Evans, returning in place of Harry Maguire.

Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund will all return in attack, while Antony is back in training, although he’s not ready to feature here.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Onana; Dalot, Evans, Varane, Lindelöf; Casemiro, Amrabat, Fernandes; Garnacho, Rashford, Højlund.

Crystal Palace team news

Dean Henderson made his Crystal Palace debut on Tuesday, although he was taken off injured less then 20 minutes into that one, so Sam Johnstone will be donning the gloves this time.

Joel Ward, Joachim Andersen, Marc Guéhi, Eberechi Eze and top-scorer Odsonne Édouard were all rested for the Carabao Cup tie, with Roy Hodgson openly admitting he is prioritising this fixture.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guéhi, Mitchell; Hughes, Doucouré, Schlupp, Ayew, Eze; Édouard.
